The Mid-Shore Community Foundation awarded $125,000 to the second class of Austin and Martha Steele Scholars. Austin and Martha Steele were retired educators who resided in both Dorchester and Talbot counties. They wanted to support the development of a new generation of leaders committed to community service and education. They also wanted to ensure that public high school graduates with an exceptional academic record would have the funds necessary to complete their college degree.
Each year, the Mid-Shore Community Foundation provides $25,000 scholarships to one public high school graduate from each of the 5 Mid-Shore counties thanks to the generosity of Austin and Martha Steele. For 2010, the scholarships were awarded to Christina Davidson, Aubree Hall, Lacey Letmate, Cayce Marth, and Rachael Seward.
Christina Davidson is a talented artist who was involved in dance, art, and drama at KentCountyHigh School. ColonelRichardsonHigh School graduate Cayce Marth is still undecided on her career goals but she is passionate about reading with the possibility of becoming a reading specialist. Rachael Seward has wanted to be an elementary school teacher most of her life. She explains, “I would line up all my stuffed animals in front of my chalkboard and beg my grandma to become a student in my class.” While at Queen Anne’s CountyHigh School, she had a distinguished academic record; she also had an extraordinary level of community service in local church related groups and the Girl Scouts.
